Heard of Bokashi? How about Compost Tea?

Green-thumbed locals who would like to learn more about these topics — and who have their Saturday mornings free this month — are encouraged to sign up for our three-part workshop at Sonoma Garden Park, featuring the inimitable Cuauhtemoc Villa.

These hands-on workshops are for gardeners of all levels, and will teach them how to turn their ordinary garden into a flourishing super-garden through the use of time-honored composting techniques.

Bokashi, by the way, is a fermented, anaerobic form of composting and a main ingredient in making one’s garden come alive. Another essential ingredient is biochar — a form of charcoal that is useful as a soil amendment — and a demonstration on its creation and uses will be given during the third workshop by Sonoma Ecology Center’s Raymond Baltar.

Villa is an expert on Native American farming practices and on the making and use of bokashi. He promotes sustainable agriculture development in his outreach programs for youths and adults, encouraging best-use practices for future generations. Baltar is director of the Sonoma Biochar Initiative, a project of the Sonoma Ecology Center, and is also senior biochar projects manager for SEC.
