We are delighted to welcome Jeanne-Louise Camus to the Sonoma Ecology Center Board of Directors. Jeanne-Louise has kindly answered for us some questions about her path to becoming a Sonoma Ecology Center Board Member. Get to know Jeanne-Louise below!

Can you tell us about your story and how you’ve come to Sonoma Ecology Center as a Board Member?

I first visited Sonoma Garden Park during the pandemic and started taking yoga classes there. I fell in love with the Park and started volunteering. The following Spring, I rented my own garden plot and was there most days with my young children, working on our plot and helping with weeding and harvesting! During the summer, I often saw groups of children come through the garden and would hear them at pick-up with their parents sharing what they learned. I heard this little girl tell and show her mom what she learned during Summer Camp that day. Here was a park that had the ability to educate and inspire young children and I knew I wanted to be part of this.

What do you hope to bring to SEC from your professional and personal experience?

My greatest asset is my enthusiasm and love for nature. Additionally, I have a background in Public Service and Philanthropy. I currently teach Pilates in Sonoma and enjoy engaging with the community and tourists alike.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I enjoy being outside, hiking, and bike riding. You will often see me biking with my kids in the back of my e-bike! I also love cooking, especially with the seasonal vegetable and fruits I get from Sonoma Garden Park Harvest Markets.

Is there anything else you would like to share to the Sonoma Ecology Center community about your hopes for SEC and the greater community?

My hope is that we become more responsible consumers, not just of the products we buy (and dispose of properly) but also of the land, air, and water. The best I can do is lead by example for my children. As part of Sonoma Ecology Center Board of Directors, I am most excited about the best practices we are developing here in Sonoma that can then be shared with the rest of the world to address climate change and increase ecological resiliency.

¿Nos puedes contar de tu historia y cómo llegaste a servir como miembro de la mesa directiva de Sonoma Ecology Center?

La primera vez que visité Sonoma Garden Park fue durante la pandemia y empecé a tomar clases de yoga ahí. Me enamoré del parque y me convertí en voluntaria. La siguiente primavera, renté mi propia parcela en el jardín y pasé muchos días ahí con mis hijos, trabajando en nuestra parcela y ayudando removiendo la maleza y cosechando! Durante el verano, regularmente veía grupos de niños visitar el jardín y escuchaba lo que compartían con sus padres cuando era hora de recogerlos. Escuché a una niña contarle a su mamá lo que aprendió ese día durante el campamento de verano. Aquí había un parque que tiene la habilidad de educar e inspirar a niños y supe que quería ser parte de ello. 

¿Qué esperas contribuir a SEC por parte de tu experiencia personal y profesional?

Mi más gran cualidad es mi entusiasmo y amor por la naturaleza. Adicionalmente, poseo un antecedente en servicio público y filantropía. Actualmente enseño Pilates en Sonoma y disfruto interactuar con ambos la comunidad y turistas.

¿Qué te gusta hacer en tu tiempo libre?

Disfruto pasar tiempo afuera, senderear, y andar en bicicleta. ¡Me verás en mi bicicleta con mis hijos en la parte posterior de mi bicicleta eléctrica! También amo cocinar, especialmente con frutas y verduras de temporada que compro en el mercado de Sonoma Garden Park.

¿Hay algo más que te gustaría compartir con la comunidad de Sonoma Ecology Center acerca de tus esperanzas para SEC y la comunidad a largo?

Espero que nos volvamos consumidores más responsables, no solamente de los productos que consumimos (y desechamos apropiadamente) pero también del la tierra, el aire, y el agua.  Lo mejor que puedo hacer es guiar a mis hijos por ejemplo. Como parte de la mesa directiva de Sonoma Ecology Center, estoy emocionada acerca de las prácticas que estamos desarrollando aquí en Sonoma que pueden ser compartidas con el resto del mundo para enfrentar el cambio climático e incrementar la resiliencia ecológica.
