Part of our Hiking for Fitness program, these free, moderate-to-strenuous group hikes are geared to keep you motivated through the cold season. Registration is required. Parking fees apply. Hikes are (usually) every second and fourth Saturday of the month.

11/11 – Vista Trail Loop (clockwise): ~4.1 mi, 600ft elevation, meets @ main lot
11/25 – Goodspeed to Nattkemper bench: 4.2 mi, 1060 ft elevation, meets @ Goodspeed lot
12/9 – Vista to Bald Mountain Loop: 6 mi, 1520 ft elevation, meets @ White Barn lot
12/16 –  Brushy Peaks to Neptune picnic table: 4.3 mi, 650-ft elevation, meets @ White Barn lot

Embrace the tranquility of Sunday mornings at Sugarloaf as our experienced instructor guides you in the ancient practice of Tai Chi. This gentle holistic wellness practice is perfect for beginners and those with limited mobility.

Meet at the amphitheater. Wear comfortable clothing and footwear and bring water. Not recommended for children under 16.

Tickets are $15 per session or $80 for all 6 dates. Sonoma County Resident? Free with an October 2023 or newer Park Rx from a participating Sonoma County Medical Provider. Click here for Park Rx info.

Ease of access: there are two main lots in the park: the main lot and the White Barn lot. Each lot has one van-designated accessible parking spot and an accessible porta-potty or vault toilet. Each parking lot has access to the ADA-compliant Creekside Nature Trail, which crosses the amphitheater. The trail measures approximately 0.45 miles one way, with the trailhead across the main parking lot being the shortest of the two ends. Should further accessibility accommodations be required, please call the Visitor Center at 707-833-5712 between 9:00am and 5:00pm.

ParkRx - Beginning Hiking for Fitness Series @ Sugarloaf Ridge State Park | Kenwood | California | United States

The Hiking for Fitness Series is back for 2024! Join us for the Beginner Hiking for Fitness program, where the leaders will guide you on a series of 8 weekly hikes with the challenge increasing each week. Before the first hike, the leader will discuss proper shoes, hydration, incorporating hiking poles, proper pacing, etc. The group’s final hike aims for the route up Brushy Peaks Trail, where hikers can enjoy the beautiful vistas.

The following is a list of possible routes specifically selected for this hiking series:

1) Sat 1/6 – White Barn to Uranus, 2.1 miles, 180 ft elev [meet @ white barn]
2) Sat 1/13 – Hillside-Meadow loop, 3 miles, 490 ft elev [meet @ white barn]
3) Sat 1/20 – Lake Ralphine & Spring Lake loop, 4.3 miles, 420 ft elev [meet @ Santa Rosa’s Howarth Park boathouse]
4) Sat 1/27 – Jack London State Historic Park, May’s Clearing (map link), 3.5 miles, 820 ft elev [meet @ upper parking lot, 2400 London Ranch Road, Glen Ellen, CA 95442]
5) Sat 2/3 – Vista Trail loop, 3.5 miles, 830 ft elev [meet @ white barn]
6) Sat 2/10 – Stern + Waterfall loop, 2.7 miles, 750 ft elev [meet @ main lot]
7) Sat 2/17 – Sonoma Valley Regional Park & Lake Suttonfield loop, 4.3, miles, 770 ft elev [meet at Valley of the Moon Trailhead, Sonoma Valley Regional Park, on Arnold Dr.]
8) Sat 2/24 – Hillside to Neptune picnic table, 4.4 miles, 970 ft elev [meet @ white barn]

Please note these routes are subject to change. Wear appropriate footwear for muddy or slippery trails and layers, as the group hikes in light rains. Bring at least a quart of water, and if desired, a snack. The group will be limited to 35 participants.

The route varies on weather conditions and group interest that typically covers 2-3 miles of varied terrain. All levels and ages welcome.

Tickets are $30 for general audiences and include parking if registered in advance online. Please wear weather-appropriate clothing to feel comfortable being in a natural setting and bring water (as needed). Meet outside the Visitor Center unless otherwise noted in confirmation email prior to the hike. Limited to 12 participants.

The practice of Forest Therapy has been shown to improve health and well-being.

Have you heard about “Shinrin-yoku” or “forest bathing”? Here is an opportunity to take a walk and experience the practice for yourself. Learn techniques to maximize the health benefits and stress reducing qualities of this walking practice. Shinrin-yoku originated in Japan and is gaining popularity in the United States for its documented health benefits.

This practice takes a walk in the woods to another level. A centering and calming restorative practice, it promotes balance and restored vitality through a quality of presence and heightened sensory awareness. Sugarloaf Ridge State Park hosts a Forest Therapy Series as part of its Park Rx Program the 4th Sunday of the month led by certified Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT) practitioners.

We invite you to join us on this therapeutic experience of sights, sounds, scents, touch, and memory. The outing begins at the White Barn and meanders less than one mile from the start point in a reverie of introspection and connection to the natural world.

Tickets are $20 or free with an January 2024 or newer Park Rx from a Sonoma County Medical Provider. Click here for Park Rx information. Please have your Park Rx available at the time of sign-up, as the number of Park Rx tickets is limited and you will be asked to turn in a copy at the time of registration.

Wear layers, comfortable footwear, bring water, sun protection, and if desired, a snack or a picnic to enjoy after the event. Parking fees apply. Heavy rains cancel.

Ease of access: Creekside Nature Trail has two trailheads. The trailhead from the White Barn is ADA compliant for about 0.1 miles. Our route for this hike veers off to the left across a narrow bridge and single-track dirt trail that connects with Hillside and then backtracks. The entire route is approximately 3/4 of a mile with approximately 100ft of elevation gain.
