Outing & Picnic at Buckeye Knob

Buckeye Knob, located on the east side of Sonoma Mountain, is a privately owned property protected through a conservation easement donated to the Ag + Open Space District by the property owners. The 52-acre property is located on a highly visible south-facing hillside, and includes grassland, oak woodland, and the lush upper canyon of Carriger Creek.

Sonoma Ecology Center naturalists and guests will share their natural and cultural history knowledge while we get an invigorating workout into our weekend. Hikers will explore the canyon first, and then climb to the top of the knob for a picnic while enjoying a spectacular view of Sonoma Valley, the Mayacamas, and San Pablo Bay. Following our picnic, we will return back through Buckeye Knob.

This is an intermediate level hike with some steep ascents and descents. We will hike approximately 3 to 4 miles, and there is some elevation gain and very uneven footing. The round-trip hike will start at the Eliot Family Loop and rise up to the East Slope Ridge Trail in Jack London for scenic views before returning back to the Eliot Property.

There is no charge for this outing, which is made possible by the voters of Sonoma County who fund the work of Ag + Open Space with a quarter-cent sales tax.
