After the October 2017 Nun’s fire and the October 2020 Glass fire burned 70-85% of Sugarloaf, it took months of hard work to repair trails and facilities. Now, almost 3 years after the Glass fire, signs of the devastation are masked by a vibrant recovery and renewal.
Join Certified CA Naturalist John Lynch on this 3.5 mile, 2.5 hour hike along the Lower Bald Mountain hillside to the Observatory and back along the shady creekside, we will explore these remarkable changes and talk a little about how the original peoples of this area used fire. We will also search for late summer wildflowers, butterflies and dragonflies.
Tickets are $15 general, $7.50 for students, youth (12-17 year olds; must be accompanied by an adult), Sugarloaf members, Sugarloaf volunteers, and free for children under 12 years old. Meet outside the Visitor Center. Bring at least a quart of water, layered clothing, hiking shoes/boots, snack, sun protection, and as an option, hiking poles and a camera. Parking fees apply.
Ease of access: Lower Bald Mountain Trail is a narrow gravel and dirt foot trail that connects the main parking lot with the Robert Ferguson Observatory. The Creekside Nature Trail is an ADA compliant trail with a flat surface of compacted gravel and a slope no larger than 5 degrees. Both Lower Bald Mountain and the Creekside Nature Trail have access to a parking lot (either the main lot or the White Barn lot) with accessible an accessible vault toilet (main lot) or porta-potty (White Barn lot) and one van-designated accessible space in each.
