Sonoma Ecology Center is a 28-year-old nonprofit with a mission to work with our community to identify and lead actions that achieve and sustain ecological health of our community’s land, air, water, and biodiversity – the foundation of our high quality of life.

Each year, we provide in-depth environmental science instruction to over 1,200 students, manage over 4,000 acres of public and private land including Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, raise thousands of native plants and restore critical native habitat, and provide research and technical support on timely issues affecting the region. We have over 20 professional staff and manage numerous large grants and contracts, often in partnership with other nonprofits and agencies that, by working together, significantly leverage our work and impact.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

Sonoma Ecology Center is proud to deliver K-12 education in the Sonoma Valley, through classroom lessons and field trips for grades 2, 4, 5, and 6, and our unique EnviroLeader program, specifically for high school students. We also provide other educational opportunities through summer/winter camps, including our popular Harry Potter-inspired camp and backpacking camps at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. The Educator will also have the opportunity to support public outings and hikes, community workshops, and volunteer events.

Sonoma Ecology Center seeks an enthusiastic and confident educator to join our dynamic team. We want candidates who are committed to inspiring a diverse community to appreciate and improve their environment through youth education. Candidates who have basic background knowledge of and interest in teaching, environmental issues such as water conservation and quality, pollution prevention, renewables, climate change, and other current issues are encouraged to apply. One must be professional and have excellent class management skills.

This is a 32 hour per week position. Weekend and evening work is required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to)

  • Develop, present and lead classroom lessons and field trips in a variety of environmental academic areas
  • Positively represent SEC with parents, teachers and community members
  • Co-manage the EnviroLeader teen program every semester
  • Support and guide the EnviroLeaders with their final project
  • Support / Collaborate with the Program Manager in lesson planning and camp preparation
  • Assist with summer, winter and day camps
  • Safely lead groups in outdoor activities
  • Supervise up to 3 volunteers for pre-planned activities
  • Other duties as assigned

 

ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES

  • Voice projection, improvisational skills, and know how to teach in an engaging hands-on manner
  • Energetic, dedicated and able to learn about multiple projects, our program, and new environmental issues
  • Committed and able to learn new lesson plans and curricula
  • Excellent classroom management skills, ability to work with diverse communities and different ages
  • Exhibit excellent judgment in regards to safety, risk prevention, and the well-being of students
  • Able to adapt teaching style for various ages and learning styles
  • Experience with teaching, camp counseling or other youth activities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other programs essential for job functions
  • Well-organized and able to handle multiple assignments

 

ADDITIONAL COMPETENCIES (PREFERRED)

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English)
  • Special skills with students (music, singing, storytelling, etc.)
  • Science background
  • Familiar with the Sonoma Valley Watershed and Community
  • Familiar with native geography, flora, fauna, local history and/or gardening
  • The desire for a collaborative work environment, while able to work independently

 

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in education, environmental studies, biology, geography or another related field, or;
  • Three years of relevant work experience, classroom education, field trips, camps, outdoor recreation, etc.
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification or willingness to acquire certification promptly

 

REQUIRED

You must be able to pass a DOJ & FBI background check as well as a DMV check. You will become a mandated reporter. One will have to maintain personal auto insurance, have a current driver’s license and have a reliable vehicle. A working cell phone is a must.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is a combination of office-based work, classroom work, and outdoor fun. In the office, one will use a computer, phone, copier, and may sit for long periods. Classroom settings involve standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, and bending. Outdoor education is in the open elements and inclement weather, exposed to sun, wind, cold, and heat. The candidate must be able to lift and carry up to 40 lbs. safely. This position requires bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, and sitting for long periods. Sonoma Ecology Center is a drug-free workplace.
